There has probably been a church at this location since the seventh century.   The wooden Saxon church was replaced in the 13th century by Sir Stephen de Hacombe, lord of the manor, on his return from the crusades.   It was rebuilt by the Carew family in 1622 and thoroughly restored in 1896.
