The St Nicholas Church became a mortury chapel when the new St Peter's Church was opened in Shaldon in 1894.
There is a faint cross on an outside stone on the north-east corner of the church.
Some say it was left by a crusader who cut it to be completed if he returned from the Holy Land,
others say its just a Mason's mark.
