FLMI GOLF DAY

The Winning Foursome from the FLMI Golf Day
golf day winning foursome

From Left to Right: John Roberts, John Pocock, George Brennan, and John Zupko

Held on Wednesday May 10th, 2000 at the Beaverdale Golf and Country Club to RAVE reviews!!!

"Awesome"

"It was Great"

"Organized well, terrific prizes"

"Great Time"

It was FUN! It was GREAT! It was WET!!!

Despite the soggy weather on May 10th, 2000 (or should we say all summer long), there were a lot of smiles to go around.

We had many teams brave the rain for our tournament, but only the hearty completed the grueling nine holes. The others waited patiently at the 19th hole and made sure everything was running smoothly in the clubhouse.

Our winners are, drum roll please….

The 3 Johns and a George. That is John Roberts, John Pocock, John Zupko, and George Brennan. Congratulations to our winners!

There were great prizes for all who attended. We wish to thank our many sponsors for the wonderful support and generosity they have shown.

A special thank you for the people behind the scenes of this day who helped make it a success. You know who you are.

All of the comments given on the survey have been noted and we are thankful for your feedback. This helps us know where improvements can be made to make another Golf Day EVEN MORE FUN!

SPRING LUNCHEON

Held Tuesday May 16th, 2000 at the Waterloo Inn
featuring Trevor Matthews, EVP of Canadian Operations, Manulife Financial

Trevor Matthews
EVP of Canadian Operations,
Manulife Financial
LOMA Board Member

Mr. Matthews comments were focused on TAKING STOCK: LIFE AFTER DEMUTUALIZATION

Here are some excerpts from his speech (summary provided by Marianne Fletcher):

bulletAlthough demutualization of the five companies in Canada has been complicated, it has resulted in a total value of 6.2 billion dollars. This in turn has stimulated the economy in the form of shares or cash totalling approximately 20 million dollars being distributed to over 2 million Canadians.
bulletDemutualization has brought increased notice by the news media, public, investment community, government and securities regulators. As well, an international accounting standard must be found for these companies.
bulletIn Trevor’s opinion, the future of the insurance industry is optimistic. Two of the key driving forces are demographics and technology. Populations are living longer and are significantly wealthier. In Canada, there are approximately 220,000 affluent Canadians, which is expected to triple in the next 6 years. We must meet the demand for increased wealth management services.
bulletThe growth in technology is amazing. Internet users are expected to top a billion by 2005. Companies must be ready to meet this demand.
bulletHow do we succeed in the future? Leadership is a key issue. To be a leader of companies, we need to find the right people for the jobs. Allowing people to find their right ‘slot’ in a company by moving around until they find the right position for themselves. The next step is to step back and allow them room to grow.
bulletAlso, we must never forget that the customer is a fundamental ingredient in our business. So focus on the customer’s point of view and remember they are knowledgeable and aware. Now that we moving to a global business, everyone must be aware of what is happening in the financial services world and bring new ideas to their companies. New ideas make leaders and customers watch for companies to create new opportunities for them.
bulletThese are very exciting times. We have opportunities to compete aggressively on the outside while collaborating superbly on the inside to collectively serve the customer better.
bulletA favourite quote about leadership comes from Napoleon and he defines a leader as a dealer in hope. Leadership is about giving people some hope and confidence about the future.
