The midwifery model of care is unique in health care. Its philosophy emphasizes informed choice, choice of birthplace, and continuity of care.
Midwives promote informed choice in decision making. This philosophy relies on a full exchange of information in a relaxed, non-authoritarian, co-operative manner. We encourage women to actively participate in their care. We encourage decision making as a shared responsibility, but recognize the woman as the primary decision-maker.
Pregnancy and birth involve many decisions, some of which can be very difficult to make. Your midwives provide information to help you make informed decisions about birthplace, prenatal testing, technology and baby care. We guide and support you in your decisions, but we will not make them for you.
