I know a bank where the wild thyme blows,
Where oxlips and the nodding violet grows,
Quite over-canopied with luscious woodbine,
With sweet musk-roses, and with
eglantine.”

I think we all know a special place where wildflowers grow and
where we sometimes take refuge from our everyday concerns. The summer months are the perfect time to
revisit our favorite haunts, and also to explore new natural areas that may
well become our future special places.
Why not join our outings leaders as they explore their special
places? We’ve lined up some
familiar destinations and some new ones to spice up our summer outings (see
bats, bees and carnivorous plants).
My thanks to all our outing leaders who
have so generously given of their time and expertise this year to enrich our
experience with the world around us.

2009 KWFN PLANT NUT
OUTINGS
Larry Lamb and I have organized a series of trips to botanize a
few local wetland areas that, because of their wet nature, are seldom
explored. We may see some unusual
carnivorous plants such as Sundew and Pitcher Plant. The outings, which are open to ALL members of
KWFN in good standing, are not for the fainthearted. There are no trails to follow. Most are in wet areas. In the past we have crossed streams, etc., so
come prepared to get wet. But, if
you’re a native plant nut, it’s worth it!
I would appreciate it if you would contact me either by
telephone (519-662-2529) or email: wbuck@golden.net
to let me know if you plan to attend.
Thank you in advance for your consideration. Submitted by Wayne Buck.
DEAN’S LAKE
Sunday, August 9, 2009
I don’t know a lot about Dean’s Lake except that
Larry knows of some interesting wetland plants that historically have grown
there. One of the owners of the land
bordering the lake has offered to accompany us on this outing. It has been many years since Larry has
visited this gem just south of Cambridge.
Who knows what we’ll find!

At this writing, we have not obtained permission to visit this
area. I hope to have permission by the
time you receive the next edition of
The Heron.
We were here several years ago but just got to the good part when we ran
out of time. The best is yet to come!

to be a lot of turtles crossing roads. Please contact Angie Schoen so she
may build a data base of these areas. She will use this information to
