KWFN Outings - Scheduled and submitted by Mary Voisin

From time to time, some members may schedule impromptu outings not advertised in the Heron.  These additional last minute outings are posted on the Kitchener Waterloo Field Naturalists’ website.  Occasionally check the website for these outings by googling KWFN for details.  By the way, if you would like to lead an outing anytime, email maryvoisin@rogers.com .

Meet, Greet and Explore!

I would like to introduce a new style of outing so more opportunities can be offered for people to enjoy the outdoors together. The difference in this outing? There is no designated leader. It’s a shared experience!

Meet at the given location.

Greet your fellow naturalists. (experienced and new) Guests are always welcome.

Explore together. Share your questions and knowledge as you enjoy your hike together.

Note regarding guests - Please email maryvoisin@ rogers.com for a waiver form for your guest to sign. Drop this signed form off at the next KWFN meeting.

If you would like to lead an outing, please contact me.   Mary Voisin 519-884-6881

Bannister Lake to Dickson Wilderness Walk

Saturday, June 19, 2010

Wayne Buck 519-662-2529

Larry Lamb 519-744-5354

Duration: approximately 3 hrs

Meeting Time/Place:

1:00 pm at the car park on Homer Watson and Fountain St. just south of the 401

Degree of difficulty: difficult; unimproved (i.e. primative) single file, rough dirt path

It has been some time since we have had an outing on this trail near Wrigly’s Corners.

We are not sure what we will see along the trail, but we do know that we will see some restored prairie along with several species of oak and hickory at Dickson.

We may also see some waterfowl from the viewing platform at Bannister.

The plan is to car pool, driving some cars to our destination at Dickson so we can drive participants back to Bannister Lake.

Do not bring valuables that you have to leave in the car. Bring sun screen and insect repellant. Wear protective clothing and sturdy footwear.

Turtle Nesting Monitoring at RiverSong Banquet Hall

Thursday, June 17 and Wednesday, June 23, 2010

Please email John the day before the outing if you plan to go and he will email you back to confirm that the outing is still on. If there is no visible turtle activity, the outing will be cancelled.

John Pries    email  john.h.pries @gmail.com

Meeting Time/Place:

7:30 pm at RiverSong Banquet Hall, 632 Hawkesville Rd., St. Jacobs (north side across from Three Bridges Banquet Hall beside the Conestogo River) Park at the west side (elevated end) of the parking lot and walk through the gate.

Since purchasing our property at RiverSong Banquet Hall, we have had the pleasure of watching painted and snapping turtles excavate nest pits and lay eggs into our beach volleyball court. It is amazing how far they will travel and through what terrain to find a suitable site. Typically raccoons feast on the eggs once laid resulting in few if any young turtles being produced. We have begun to protect at least a few of the nests from predators and monitor the volleyball court on a regular basis for new nests. We wish to open our turtle nursery to some limited access on some selected evenings for you to view this process. Typically the egg laying occurs from about mid to end June. Caution: We have some large snapping turtles so watch where you are walking!

NEWEramosa Karst Conservation Area
Wednesday, June 23, 2010
Janice Bock  745- 3296 or traveljb@hotmail.com

Meeting Time/Place:

9:00 am – carpooling and leaving at 9 am

This new conservation area near Lime Ridge Mall and the Lincoln Alexander Parkway (Hamilton) shows the karst features of sinkholes, caves and underground rivers.  The dolomite rock in the outdoor amphitheatre is the same as escarpment stone.  Join Rita G. of Friends of the Eramosa Karst as she leads us in our walkabout--good trails and fairly level.  She will also show us the nesting site where a Great Horned Owl family lived last July.  We will stop for coffee after we leave the Eramosa Karst area.  See  www.eramosakarst.com.  PLEASE reply to Janice by June 21.

NEW!  Mitchell Wetlands, Forest, River and Mill Pond
Tuesday, August 17, 2010

Wil Prudham  896- 7474 or Janice Bock  traveljb@hotmail.com

Meeting Time/Place:

9 am  -carpooling and leaving at 9 am (behind beer store at Highland/Fisher-Hallman)

There's a reason that so many Perth Field Naturalists live in Mitchell, a stone's throw from Stratford.  They can go birding any day of the year and the list is long.  (See  www.westperthtrails.com)  We've made contact with one of the locals and hope he/she can join us that day as we start at the wetlands just beyond the berms, then check out the forest and meadow along the River Thames.  After a light lunch at the cafe/bakery, we'll wander along the mill pond for more sightings.  (For Hockey fans, the small town of Mitchell is the home of ________?)

Mark this one on your summer calandar--it is a "must see".  Please reply to Wil or Janice by August 15.

Native Plant Nuts Outings

Summer outings

Each summer Larry Lamb and I organize one or two outings to a site in the region, often where significant plants have been recorded in the historical past.

Now that Larry has retired, he would like to set up a group of people who are keenly interested in plants, who, might like to go on some outings in the summer to look for plants.

If you are interested, please send me your name(s) and email address, (no phone calls please) and I will notify you when Larry notifies me of an upcoming outing.

If you do not have email, you could arrange with someone who does to contact you when they receive notice.
