President's Message

Message from the President
Fall 2020

Greetings to all members and students!

I can’t believe that my 2-year term as President has flown by so fast and that this will be my last message. Concurrent with the end of my term as President I will be stepping down from the Board, so this is a bit of a good-bye. It has been quite an unexpected 2 years, given the current global challenges, but I have thoroughly enjoyed working with the Board to try to bring the members of the LOMA Society of Waterloo a great membership experience.

I mentioned in my spring message how the current global environment can be isolating and stressful for many people. Even though we’ve seen businesses and schools re-open, I think the stress and anxiety from the spring is still here and will likely be with us for at least a little while longer. We at the LOMA Society of Waterloo hope that we can do our small part to improve the situation by sharing resources and opportunities to connect.

We hosted our first ever virtual meeting on June 23 and were excited to include a presentation from Dr. Georgia Pomaki. Dr. Pomaki shared some great insights and tips related to Mental Health During the Pandemic. In case you missed the event, the materials from Dr. Pomaki’s presentation can be found on our website.

Also, we are very excited to host a collaborative event with the LOMA Society of Greater Toronto Area, which includes a presentation from Russ Anderson, Head of Financial Crimes Services for LIMRA, LOMA and LL Global Inc. on the topic of Preventing and Mitigating Account Takeover Fraud in the Life Insurance and Retirement Industry. Unfortunately, in these times of hardship, fraud is still a reality and in some cases is worsening. Some fraudsters are taking advantage of those who are already dealing with the financial, social and medical strains of the current environment. We hope this presentation will help educate us all on ways to prevent and mitigate these crimes.

We couldn’t put on these events or achieve our plans without the great work from our Board members. All our Board has been working hard to adapt to the remote environment in which we now have to work and the virtual venue our events need to take.

The Board is continuing to seek more new members and notes that the position of Manulife company rep is currently vacant. I am happy to note that we have received a couple of new board nominations, with Justin Maydanski from Equitable Life running for the position of President and Kevin Netterfield from Equitable Life running for the position of Vice-President.

If you are interested in any position on our Board, or you wish to nominate someone else, please contact me, or any other Board member. We would love for you to become a Board member.

We at the Board are always happy to hear from you. The Board members welcome the opportunity to hear your ideas for future events, guest speakers and topics that you would like to have discussed. We will send a survey out after the Fall meeting – All feedback is welcome!!

This is Your Society and we want it to continue to be of value to YOU - Our Members.

Kindest regards,

Tristan Smith, CPA, CA, BMath, MAcc, FLMI
