Black currants are prized for their distinctive flavor in wine, juice, jam, jelly, pies and other desserts. They are also rich in vitamin C. There are reports that currants are very good for you too. Containing bioflavonoids which are used extensively in the treatment of athletic injuries because they relieve pain, bumps, and bruises. Bioflavanoids which are vasopressor agents are also reported to reduce blood pressure. Currants are also claimed to contain phyto-chemicals (anthocyanidins, ellagic acid ). Both act as antioxidants, thus as anti-cancer substances that may help protect cells. Anthocyanidins may also protect against heart disease. The berries are also rich in soluble fiber, which may help reduce cholesterol.

VARIETIES:
Crandall currants (R. Odoratum)Origin: Mr. Crandall of Newton, Kansas, United States selected this from wild R. odoratum. Crandall was introduced in the United States in 1888. The plant has ornamental yellow flowers which reach full bloom in late April. This cultivar is late ripening in late July, high yielding, with very large fruits. The plant is resistant to mildew, gray mold, leaf spot, and white pine blister rust. The plant is stiffly upright and vigorous. The leaves turn red in the fall. This cultivar is recommended for u-pick.
