My contributions to Linux and free software
- Fixing a broken line and missing character in libnspr, a Mozilla
sub-project. They accepted and closed my bug report, and later, I got a total
of 3 requests from the Mozilla Organisation for permission to relicence Mozilla,
to which I consented.
- Sending in a security leak bug report to the W3C Validator team, and another
one later. I was thanked for the first, and for all I know, acknowledged in a
file somewhere.
- Made a Gnutella development website which included downloads and source
code browsing to all free software/open source Gnutella projects. This video
was used by a great many people, I think it had tens of thousands of views. I
think it may have helped with general coding ability for many people. Another
interested person made a mirror and kept it online for over 10 years.
- Requesting a terminal-only release of Nethack in Debian. This one I'm not
sure if was a good idea, particularly the suffix -console instead of -nox or
-terminal or -tty was not a good idea. It was granted, and maybe that's why it
ended up on the
woody
CD 1.
- Finding a bug and sending in a patch to Gnut, a console/terminal Gnutella
servant (usually called a servent). It was accepted and I got an
acknowledgement in the changelog.
- Finding a bug in dpkg, I sent in a patch which was accepted, and I got an
acknowledgement in the changelog. This tiny fix may be used on millions of
people's computers in the future.
I am not counting tech support or advocacy here, though I suppose I
could.
